If you have played the Mega Millions lottery in the past decade, you could become a target for scammers. The FBI has released a warning for any lotto players that have been playing for some time. This latest scheme looks real, with emails that have official lotto logos, and written in a form that makes it seem serious.
Even though these scams are going through emails, the FBI warns that they are in fact a scam. Reading through the documents, the FBI has noted that they require people to wire money to claim prizes based on the tax fees related to jackpots.
It’s important to know that if you win the lotto, you must pay taxes on the money you receive. However, do not be fooled, you do not have to pay up front to claim a prize. If you are asked to pay for a prize up front, then it is a scam, that’s it.
If you or someone you know does in fact get a letter claiming that you have won, and you need to pay any money at all, report it and send the file to the FBI. They are available via lc3.gov, and you can help with stopping this issue. Again, this latest scam has real logos, and looks very real, except for the part where you wire someone money. Be careful!
