Nicholas Kapoor is $100,000 richer today, and it’s all thanks to math. He is a statistics professor at Fairfield University, which is in Connecticut. He has been playing the lotto for some time, once a week, using the ideas that he’s been teaching students all along.

This is not the first time a math professor has been able to pull out a big win. He joins many others that have been focused on the math of the lottery to win. While the odds are incredible at times, there are ways that you can make them a little closer. He used a set of numbers, based on algorithms, and continued to play until he picked up his six figure win.

When interviewed, he did not reveal the numbers nor the methodology that he used. But what he did say was simple, you can’t win if you don’t play. He uses this notion of the lottery to teach students about complex numbers, and how diminishing returns could very well show number patterns and winning elements. Even with his strategy, he hasn’t won more than once, but then again, he’s still playing, so this story could very well change in the near future.
