One of the things that you may notice about purchasing lottery tickets is that they require you to use cash. Cash is not a bad thing, mind you. But retailers are going to see a change, at least in Arkansas. The state is one of the few areas in the world where you will be able to purchase lottery tickets with a debit card.
That’s right, you will be able to purchase tickets starting on August 1, 2017 with the use of a debit card instead of cash. This is something that is relatively new, and will no doubt bring about a lot of people buying tickets. However, retailers are pushing back. Many retailers do not want to use debit cards for transactions as they pay fees in regard to using them.
Even though the law may require it, many retailers don’t like it, and that will be something that should be a battle moving forward. It should be noted that lottery retailers only get a 5% commission on ticket sales, which is not much of a markup, and accepting debit card purchases and processing the fees may cost more than that amount.
Even though this is a relatively new issue, Arkansas is set to go forward with allowing debit cards to be used for the purchase of lottery tickets. It could go well, or it could be a stumbling block for some lottery players. Either way, it may be something that spreads beyond Arkansas, sooner than later.
